Cedar Point is known for its HUGE coasters. Millennium Force and Top Thrill Dragster define the skyline, standing 300 and 400 feet tall, respectively. But one of the fiercest rides here stands at 105 feet. It’s Maverick. And it is insane.
The newest roller coaster at Cedar Point, Maverick’s line is never short, but it is always worth it. It is a very efficient queue, and moves quickly. The closer you get to the station, the more the excitement builds.
The trains are Intamin masterpieces, with wide, comfortable seats and over the shoulder restraints. As you settle in, the restraints come down and you are able to pull them down, tightly but still comfortably.
The launch is not steep, but is very unique. Rather than a cable or chain lift, it is an Linear Synchronous Motor launch up the bright red track.
When I first rode Maverick, I had never been on a ride with a beyond vertical drop. And with Maverick’s 95 degree drop I was not disappointed. It rips you out of your seat with surprisingly strong force. Next you do several banked turns that really make you feel like the ride is trying to buck you off.
Next comes a hill with some insane ejector air. Then more turns the a one of a kind element called a twisted horseshoe roll. What it is is a corkscrew with a banked turn followed by another corkscrew. After this you turn into a tunnel where you are launched at 70 mph back outside. This is followed by another inversion and an over banked turn and another ejector air hill.
Finally, the bucking and speeding train slows to a halt. You return slowly to the station a changed man left out of breath.
Maverick is a simply amazing ride. It left me breathless, but not beat up. It left me in submission but not hurt.
